Sport at Cardinal Newman
Cardinal Newman is a member of the Elmbridge & Runnymede Primary Schools Sports Association (ERPSSA). This is an association of 21 primary and junior schools competing in regular sports fixtures, tournaments and competitions.
Sport is given a very high profile in the school and the emphasis is always on participation, fun and the desire to improve in all key areas including skill levels, fitness, tactical understanding of games and self belief. We operate a ‘sport for all’ policy and all our sports clubs are open to all children in a particular year group. High levels of enthusiastic participation coupled with a strong desire to compete well when representing the school has resulted in a large number of sporting successes at ERPSSA events over recent years. This is something of which the children are rightly proud. They want to be successful, they work hard in training and they reap the rewards when the little bits of luck go our way at key moments.
Participation in sports not only raises physical fitness levels, it also raises self esteem, confidence, understanding of working together as a team together with a whole range of vital social skills. Our sports teams are taught to be gracious in victory and dignified in defeat and there are huge lessons to be learned in experiencing both. Sport is not all about winning but more about wanting to win because wanting to win means you will work hard to achieve your goals and can hold your head up with pride whatever the result. We are very proud of ALL our sports participants at Cardinal Newman because every time they step onto a pitch, court, dance floor or track they are doing so much good for themselves and learning such a lot of life skills. Long may it continue!
