Computing
Computing Intent and Implementation
We are living in an age where technology has become an integral part of our lives. Through the study of computer science at Cardinal Newman, we aim to equip all pupils with the skills, creativity and confidence to thrive in an world of rapid technological change.
Across KS1 and KS2, all pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to apply this knowledge through programming. Pupils use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. They will become digitally literate so that they can express and develop their ideas through information and communication technology. Pupils build a strong understanding of internet security, personal online safety, confidentiality and accuracy.
At Cardinal Newman Primary School, knowledge and skills taught throughout the computing curriculum are frequently revisited and built upon to ensure learning is progressive. Pupils access a range of technologies, including desktop computers, Ipads and Chrome Books, which are also used to enhance other subjects across the curriculum.
Building a robust awareness and understanding of internet safety is of paramount importance in our school. Our aim is to equip all pupils with the necessary knowledge to use the internet in a safe, considered and respectful way so that everyone can benefit from the wealth of opportunities online. Weekly computing lessons feature elements of internet safety teaching, in addition to separate internet safety lessons taught once per half term. Finally, our Digital Leaders work tirelessly to find new ways of addressing internet safety across the school and frequently find opportunity to develop and share their own understanding of how to behave responsibly online.
National Online Safety: Wake Up Wednesday Guides for Parents
We would like to make you aware of our ‘online safety’ advice, guidance and support page called ‘Wake Up Wednesday - what parents / carers need to know’.
Wake Up Wednesday, created by The National College, aims to inform parents and carers on topics such as social media platforms, gaming, and IPad security. They include top tips, important reminders and reality checks on a wide range of online safety topics. They are a great resource to keep up to date with the issues children may encounter.
We thank you for your ongoing support in assuring the safety of our pupils online.
